Frequently Asked Questions:
Basic Tools for Learning Chinese Calligraphy
1. What kind of brush should beginners buy?
Online stores often sell brush sets with three brushes: large, medium, and small. For beginners, any of these sizes are fine. you don’t need to worry too much about choosing the “perfect” brush.
Brushes do have different levels of quality, but at the beginner stage, almost any general brush sold online is good enough. Only when you reach an advanced level, when you want more refined and detailed effects, does brush quality become more important.
In short: for beginners, a simple and inexpensive set is perfectly okay.
2. Should I use a water-writing cloth (magic cloth)?
Yes. A water-writing cloth is very convenient for beginners.
-
You use clean water instead of ink
-
No risk of staining clothes or your table
-
The strokes disappear in 30–60 seconds, so it is reusable
-
You don’t need to wash the brush afterward
Because of these advantages, many beginners start with a water-writing cloth.
3. But is a water-writing cloth the same as writing on real paper with real ink?
Not exactly.
A water-writing cloth is much smoother, and the friction between the brush and the cloth is very low. Real paper and ink provide more resistance, which affects the movement and the feel of the strokes.
For that reason, I recommend preparing a small amount of real paper and real ink as well. While practicing on the water cloth, also occasionally try writing on real paper.
Eventually, all calligraphy works are created using paper and ink, so it is important to get used to the real materials.
4. How do I prepare a new brush before using it for the first time?
New brushes are usually stiff because the hairs are held together with glue. To soften the brush:
-
Put the brush tip into warm water (not hot).
-
Gently rub the tip with your fingers until all the glue dissolves.
-
Rinse it again and shape the tip to a fine point.
Now the brush is ready for writing.
5. What kind of paper should I buy?
Online shops often sell “rice paper” (xuan paper), but the quality varies a lot. Some are too thin or not very good.
Other options:
-
Old newspapers work well for basic practice
-
Avoid very smooth paper
-
Avoid printer paper, because it does not absorb ink properly
You don’t need expensive paper at the beginning; anything slightly absorbent and not too smooth will work.
6. What about water-writing cloths that have hollow outlines of strokes or characters printed on them?
Some water-writing cloths include hollow stroke outlines for tracing. This method is not recommended, because it limits your movement and prevents you from learning real strokes and characters.
If your cloth has these outlines, simply ignore them and practice freely on it.
7. Where can I buy calligraphy supplies and how much do they cost?
You can easily buy everything online: brushes, ink, paper, and water-writing cloths. Search for keywords like:
-
“Chinese calligraphy brush”
-
“Ink for calligraphy”
-
“Xuan paper” or “rice paper”
-
“Water writing cloth / magic cloth”
For beginners, you don’t need expensive items. With about $20–30, you can already buy:
-
A basic brush set
-
A bottle of ink
-
A pack of practice paper or a water-writing cloth
This is enough to start learning calligraphy seriously.
